Type Locality and Naming

Along the Kair River, South Nuratau Range. I.A. Pyanova in 1981 from the composition of terrigenous deposits attributed to the Silurian; Z.M. Abdurazimova, 1982 (23, pp.87-88), I.A. Pyanova, 1986 (371, pp.28-32)

Synonym: Kairskaya Suite, Каирская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Upper part - polymictic, often tuffogenic and gravelly sandstones, gravel-sandy and psammitic tuffites, siltstone (aleurolites), fewer slates. Predominant color of the rocks is green and tobacco-green. Thickness 230-270m.

Lower part of the section - quartz-sericite, sericite-siliceous, gray and greenish-gray slates, interbedded with polymictic sandstones, tuff-sandstones, and siltstone (aleurolites), rare interlayers of siliceous rock. Thickness 200-250m.

Total thickness of the suite 430-520m.

Regional extent

Northwest part of the South Nuratau Range. Correlated with the Caradocian-Ashgillian part of the Ilonchisay Fm and the upper part of the Kichkinacharvak Fm (Korsakov et al., 1993; Abdurazimova et al., 1993, 1996; 165; 460).

In the upper part of the section, numerous Ashgillian graptolites - Dicellograptus ornatus minor Toq., Climacograptus angustus (Perner.), Glyptograptus lorrainensis (Rued.), Paraorthograptus pacificus (Rued.) and others; chitinozoans - Lagenochitina baltica Eis., Desmochitina minor f. typica Eis., D. minor f. erinacea Eis. and others.
